Hello, and welcome! I’m Forsythia, a ceramicist and mixed media artist based in the picturesque countryside of upstate New York. I create to satisfy my impulse to bring beauty and joy into the world—to express my divine feminine spirituality and heal the inner child within myself and others.
I work primarily with translucent porcelain, with occasional forays into stoneware. I begin by throwing or handbuilding each piece, creating functional forms that serve as a foundation for later ornamentation. After trimming, I meticulously hand-carve the clay creating delicate relief work. Each piece is truly one of a kind. When you hold one of my mugs, vases, or sculptures, you’re holding hours of thoughtful creation and years of passion poured into an entirely unique work of art.
My creative journey began as a teenager when I apprenticed with a local pastel artist in Delaware. After studying history and art history at the University of Delaware and working in mixed media for several years, I touched clay for the first time and knew I had found my medium. There is something about the tactile nature of pottery, the way it transforms from raw material into a vessel of beauty and function, that continues to capture my imagination daily.
My studies in European religious art continue to influence my current work, often guiding my exploration of mortality and the fleeting nature of time. However, I approach these heavy themes with a playful and lighthearted touch, infusing my pieces with pastel colors and whimsical designs. For me, this juxtaposition is a celebration of the present moment—our lives are precious, and my work seeks to create happiness here and now.
Please enjoy browsing my collection, and if you'd like to stay updated on new work, exhibitions, or upcoming markets, be sure to sign up for my newsletter below. Thank you for stopping by and supporting my dream. Each piece carries a bit of my heart, and I hope it brings beauty and joy into your life.
Blessings,
Forsythia
